CRITICAL READING PROWESS - THE KEY TO YOUR SUCCESS ON THE SAT'S AND TO PERFORMANCE EXCELLENCE ON THE COLLEGIATE LEVEL

The MES SAT prep Critical Reading Course prepares students for high achievement on the SAT verbal exam. Students are provided not only the critical reading skills necessary, but also the study skills and test taking skills required to succeed. There is a double benefit, as this success carries over into the students’ regular schoolwork as well.

An accelerated reading rate (450-550+ words per minute) is the primary aspect of reading improvement that gives our students a distinct advantage in SAT test taking. The average high school student's reading rate today is 250 words a minute with only passing comprehension. This reading rate is not adequate to achieve higher marks on the SAT, largely due to the test’s time dependency. Simply put, students run out of time on the test trying to cover the large amount of text to be read.

This course provides 18 hours of individual instruction with students applying their skills taught in our class to their own school text books. Many students double their rate in the first six hours of instruction. Following this instruction, sight reading rates of 450 to 500 words a minute plus are not uncommon. More importantly, students achieve comprehension rates in the 80-100% range on a normal basis. Students also receive instruction in critical analysis, reading and thinking, visualization, note-taking and outlining. Success in this critical reading course prepares students for part two of our program, our advanced reading skills class.
